MINIMAL INVASIVE SURGERY

Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery

  1. The trend in recent years in all branches of surgery is to use smaller incisions and methods that cause less tissue damage than surgical methods that were previously performed with large incisions and could cause significant tissue damage. This new trend is called minimally invasive procedures. Among the people, minimally invasive procedures are called closed surgery. There is a similar trend in the treatment of diseases of the spine. Depending on the type of spine disease, various minimally invasive methods , which are commonly or less frequently used, are applied . In the following section , brief information about minimally invasive procedures used in various spinal diseases will be given.
  1. Degenerative Spinal Diseases

Micro discectomy and Endoscopic discectomy

In the surgical treatment of herniated disc, the gold standard surgery method used for a long time has been open discectomy . Today, herniated disc surgeries are most often performed with the help of a microscope with small incisions ( microdiscectomy ). . Thanks to minimally invasive interventions, patients can be discharged on the day of surgery or the next day. Patients return to their previous activity levels more quickly, as there is less muscle damage compared to open discectomy .

dynamic instrumentation

in the treatment of degenerated disc disease, if the low back pain does not go away despite all conservative methods and if it is strongly thought that the pain is due to degenerated disc disease. The theoretical advantages are: It reduces pain by sharing the loads on the disc. It prevents the abnormal movement caused by the degenerated disc and stops the wear of the disc. Since it is a mobile system, it does not prevent movement when compared to fusion. While there is some evidence to support the above-mentioned theoretical advantages of dynamic instrumentation , debate continues over its effectiveness. However, we think that it will be an effective alternative in well-chosen cases.

decompression with Narrow Channel unilateral intervention

It is chosen in the treatment of narrow canal patients who do not require instrumentation or cannot be applied for other reasons, although it is necessary . It is a technique that allows relaxation on the opposite side by using a microscope and performing a laminotomy on one side of the spine. It is made with a small incision and since a limited bone incision is made, the use of an instrument may not be necessary.

II.Adult scoliosis

minimally invasive deformity correction :

Minimally invasive treatment for the treatment of scoliosis in the lumbar region in some adult patients. anterior surgery and fusion method and posterior closed ( percutaneous ) screwing method can be applied.

of the spine

Vertebroplasty

Closed ( percutaneous ) screwing method

high-energy trauma (traffic accident, falling from a height, etc.). It is the fixation of the fracture by placing screws and rods through small incisions without making large incisions and without opening the muscle to fix the broken vertebra. The advantage is faster recovery and return to normal activity level. In addition, since it is made with a small incision, the risk of bleeding and infection is lower.
